What to do when in Hyderabad. 'City of Pearls' Hyderabad, a city with a rich history of the royalty of Nizams and the cultural influence of Mughals, has much to offer to travel hungry souls. Here are some things that you MUST do, when in Hyderabad!
Places to visit
The Pride of Hyderabad, Charminar
This beautiful piece of art stands right in the heart of the city surrounded by a bustling bazaar! This landmark was built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 to commemorate the founding of Hyderabad. The best time to visit is in the late evening when it’s illuminated.
Golconda Fort is the ruins of the massive, beautiful, ingeniously acoustic fortress of Qutb Shah and has many interesting historic tales attached to it. Best time to visit - in the peace and quiet of early morning.
The palace of Nizams, this is one of the most amazing places you will ever visit in Hyderabad. With the real personal possessions of Nizams on display, including a 1911 yellow Rolls-Royce, the photos, portraits and art belong to the Royalties, the balcony where the royal women seated in purdah for ceremonies and last but not the least the magnificent Khilwat Mubarak hall of 19 enormous chandeliers!
These three places are a must visit, but if you have time on your hands, then you can visit Qutb Shah tombs, one of the world’s largest mosque 'Mecca Masjid', Moula Ali Dargah, Ramoji Film City, Lumbini Park, Hyderabad rocks, British Residency, and Sudha Car Museum.
What to Eat
Hyderabadi Biryani - Hyderabadi Biryani originated after blending of Mughlai and Iranian cuisine in the kitchens of Nizams and it is said that vegetarian Hindu book-keepers were hired to protect and pass the recipes to the next generation so that they wont be tempted to corrupt it. Your trip to Hyderabad is incomplete if you have not devoured a kadhai full of Biryani!
What to Buy
Pearls - Pearls are the ultimate memento of the love of Hyderabad. I would suggest women to read a little about the authenticity of real pearls and to buy it from legitimate jewelry shops so that you don't get conned. You can give yourself a treat because your jewelry box deserves at least a pair of pearl earring. And men, you can gift the dear ladies in your life a beautiful pearl necklace or a bracelet.
Ittar/Attar - A traditional perfumed oil sold in the markets of Hyderabad in tiny glass bottles. You will be instantly attracted by ittar shops in the market, with strong fragrances, and glittery little bottles with yellow liquid in it looks heavenly and magical at first sight!
Metal craft - If you appreciate art, your house is incomplete without the beautiful metal craft of bidri. Bidri Hookahs, utensils, table wear, jewelry and jewelry boxes and what not, there’s much you can take back from this place. I don’t even have to give you reasons for buying these; as soon as you lay your eyes upon them, you will fall in love with it.
Bangles - Hyderabad boasts of a huge bangle market. Laad bazar has hundreds of shops with bangles being the main attraction in many shops.
